RSE

Intent

At Mounts Bay, our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to lead healthy, safe, and fulfilling lives. Our inclusive, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive curriculum promotes healthy relationships, emotional well-being, and personal safety, while providing accurate information about human development, sexuality, and reproductive health. We emphasise respect, consent, and communication, fostering resilience and self-esteem, and ensuring that all students feel respected and valued. By identifying the diversity in our country and having an awareness for the lack of diversity in Far West Cornwall and in our student body, we encouraging critical thinking, and we empower students to navigate the complexities of relationships and sexuality with confidence and respect, creating a supportive environment for meaningful discussions and questions. Additionally, we invite external speakers to enhance our curriculum offer, bringing in diverse perspectives and expertise to help raise cultural capital and awareness among our students. These guest speakers provide valuable insights and real-world experiences, enriching our curriculum and broadening students’ understanding of different cultures, identities, and societal issues.

Implementation

We implement our RSE curriculum in alignment through a blend of interactive methods to ensure comprehensive learning. Each lesson begins with a clear learning target and key terms, setting the focus for the lesson. “Do now” tasks involve defining these key terms and initiating discussions to engage students right from the start. Utilising Firefly (virtual learning platform), students access a variety of resources, including videos, quizzes, and in-class discussion forums, which complement in-class activities. This also allows for students in alternative provision such as iCollege to access the full curriculum. Classroom discussions foster an open environment where students can share thoughts and ask questions, enhancing their understanding through peer interaction. Literacy tasks, such as reading aloud or silent reading as well as reflective writing, help students explore RSE topics in depth, while real-life examples make the content relatable and practical. To assess understanding, we conduct end-of-term evaluations that include both quantitative questions, such as multiple-choice and true/false, and qualitative questions, like short essays and personal reflections or ‘what I want my teacher to know’. This balanced approach ensures we capture a full picture of student learning and development in RSE. Additionally, we use the Unifrog platform to monitor students’ career aspirations and post-16 applications, providing tailored support and preparation for their future educational and career pathways. This integration helps students make informed decisions about their next steps, ensuring they are well-prepared for life after MBA.

Impact

The impact of our RSE curriculum is measured through a combination of formative and summative assessments to ensure comprehensive understanding and retention. Formative assessments, such as low-stakes Q&A sessions, the use of whiteboards for instant feedback, and classroom discussions, allow teachers to gauge student comprehension in real-time and address any misconceptions promptly. These interactive methods encourage active participation and continuous learning. At the end of each term, summative assessments provide a more structured evaluation of student progress through a mix of quantitative and qualitative questions, as mentioned above. This balanced approach not only tracks academic achievement but also supports the development of critical thinking and personal growth, ensuring students are well-prepared to navigate relationships and the wider world with confidence and respect.
