Our aim is to provide students with a high-quality languages education that fosters a love for learning language and equips students with the skills to communicate effectively in French or Spanish. We strive to:
Prepare students for further language study and use in their future careers and personal lives.
Our curriculum has been designed to ensure there is logical progression in phonics, vocabulary and grammar. Each topic builds on prior knowledge and skills to make sure there is a coherent learning journey from KS3 to KS4 and beyond.
Teachers will use a variety of different teaching approaches including the use of authentic texts, interactive activities and technology to engage students and support their language acquisition. Feedback will be given verbally on a regular basis to promote accuracy. Teachers will use a variety of formative assessment strategies in class to monitor student progress and inform teaching. Summative assessments will be carried out at the end of each term to further track progress, identify misconceptions and gaps in knowledge. Differentiated instructions and support will be provided to ensure all students including those with SEND can access MFL lessons. We will incorporate cultural foci and activities into our lessons, such as celebrating international festivals and exploring cultural traditions whilst also trying to develop links with speakers from French and Spanish speaking communities local to us and with local employers who hold language learning in high esteem. Further cultural enrichment will be provided through trips and visits to France and Spain. These activities will help students connect language learning with real word contexts and will deepen their cultural appreciation.
Ultimately the impact of our curriculum can be seen in our improving student achievement in French and Spanish, high standards will be demonstrated through their progress and attainment in assessments in Years 7-10 and in GCSE examinations in Year 11, however we believe it is about much more than this. Students should be able to use the target language in a variety of contexts and show their understanding and appreciation of the cultures where French and Spanish are spoken. Students will be motivated to continue with their language studies at KS4 and beyond, and, most importantly given our unique geographical location and demographic we hope that by providing a diverse and inclusive language education that we raise the aspirations and broaden the horizons of our students, preparing them to engage with a globalised world.
Develop students’ linguistic understanding in the three pillars of language learning: phonics, vocabulary, and grammar.
Nurture an appreciation for different cultures, enhancing students’ global awareness.
Increase students’ aspirations and broaden their horizons by integrating cultural elements into our curriculum through technology, music, film and festivals
Ensure all students, regardless of background or ability, have the opportunity to succeed in language learning.
