Regional Level Tournament Victory for Arielle
In a gruelling week of tennis at the Newquay Heron Open Tournament, Arielle Fitkin played eleven matches over six days.
On Friday, in the final of the Girls 14U Singles, Arielle defeated Monet Baptiste from Middlesex 6-2, 6-1 to claim the Champion’s Trophy. It was a brilliant victory reflecting the daily hard work and commitment put in with her team on court and in the gym.
Following fairly comfortable victories in the early rounds, Arielle’s route to the final met stiff resistance from Agatha Evans in the semi-final. Hampered by a knee injury Arielle came out on top after a long tussle and a fight back from losing the first set. Fortunately by the time of Friday’s Final the injury situation had eased.
Looking back on the final Arielle reflected: “My serve was consistently strong and I put in a few aces which brings up the confidence for me. I think pretty much everything in the match went really well.”
“In the first set I was really pleased with the way I played, and I stayed really composed. The first few games were tough mentally. I hit a lot to Monet’s backhand. At the start of the second set I let myself get nervous. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a grade 3 final and I really wanted it…so I was worried about letting it go. I lost concentration for about a game but I regained control of the situation. I knew that I could have let her back into the match but I stuck to my game plan and let all my worries go!”
Coach Adrian Williams, who works with Arielle, said “She played really well against a formidable opponent and I was impressed with her professionalism – not only today, but throughout the week.”
To complete the successful day Arielle was soon back on court for the 14U Mixed Doubles Final. Here, with partner Oshi Leverton from Newquay they took on Joel Greatrex and Linnea Kogel from Torquay. Oshi and Arielle won 6-2, 6-2.
