The Big Match

Report by Mr Lawrence

The annual Football match between staff and the Year 11 students took place on Friday 17th June on the 3G pitch (the home of Football).

This annual fixture takes place every year and is the perfect way to say goodbye to the students. This year was no different and the game was played in great spirits, with the staff yet again being victorious, winning this epic encounter 3-2.

The game started very fast indeed with lots of tackles, shots and crosses within the first few minutes of the game. Right from the beginning it became obvious the supporters were in for a great spectacle. Both teams had chances but Year 11s started the game much stronger than the staff team and scored the opening goal. The tenacious Max Armstrong found himself one-on-one against the staff goal keeper, Mr D Angove. He calmly curled the ball around the fast approaching goalie and the students were ahead. The first half ended 1-0 to the students.

In the second half the staff team began to put bit of pressure on. The half time team talk and a change of tactics obviously did the trick. After fantastic endeavour and tackling from Mr L Hopper the ball bounced kindly to Mr Lawrence just inside the penalty area. He then simply passed the ball into the corner of the net with student goal keeper Jacob Powley not being able to get near to the ball……1-1! The students’ youth and energy was always going to create problems for the staff team, however, the staff continued to defend like heroes making it very difficult for the students. A special mention must go to Mr B Eddy, Mr A Harvey, Mr K Glenville, Mr B Montgomery and Mr N Strong for their fantastic, organised and strong defending skills.

The students’ relentless attacking was their downfall, with the staff team managing to exploit the many gaps left in defence with fast, counter-attacking Football. The staff took the lead with a sweetly struck shot from Mr M Westren, who switched the ball like David Beckham across the other side of the pitch to Mr K Lawrence, who then spotted Mr N Eddy running from deep.  Mr Lawrence chipped the ball over the defence and Mr N Eddy continued his run towards goal. With one touch he lobbed keeper Jacob Powley with a stunning right footed half volley which sparked sensational celebration scenes from the staff! What a goal, and a goal worthy of winning any match. It was now 2-1 to the staff!

The staff  team were not finished yet, and a third goal was scored from another counter attack. The ball fell to Mr Lawrence and when Jacob Powley came out of goal to cover him, Mr Lawrence squared the ball to Mr T Williams who slotted the ball home with a first time finish. Sensational stuff from the experienced staff team!

The staff continued to defend like heroes, however, the students were eventually awarded a penalty late in the game. Tom Quick scored a conciliation spot kick just before the final whistle to make the overall score 3-2 to the staff team.

The staff team are still undefeated against the students. Will next year’s Year 11s be the team that finally prove too much for the staff? We shall have to wait and see!
