On Thursday 14th June Mrs Marsden’s Year 7 Literacy class went to the book launch of Chris Higgens’s new novel, ‘A Boy Called Ocean’ at St Johns Hall. Many other primary and secondary schools attended and Chris had invited Patch Adams, the coxswain of Penlee Lifeboat, and Mischa, the European surf lifesaving champion and Hayle lifeguard, as guest speakers. The Edge of the World bookshop was there for any students who wished to buy a copy of the book and have Chris sign it.
Chris was inspired to write ‘A Boy Called Ocean’ after booking a band for a family event and finding out that two of the band members were former students of hers from St Ives School, whilst the third was a young man whom she had read about who survived six hours at sea with nothing but his surfboard. After hearing his amazing true story, she was inspired to create her own character Kai, which means the ocean in Hawaiian (ok-as well as dog in Cornish) and give him a back story.
