Rona Sailing Trip
Nine students from Mounts Bay, accompanied by Jodie Stephens (HDS) have just returned from an exciting week of sailing with the Rona Sailing Project. On Monday 27th April they left from the Hamble River on board a 65ft Yacht, Merrilyn. Over the course of the week they visited Weymouth, Poole, Lulworth Cove, Yarmouth, Portsmouth and Cowes. They also achieved a circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight. The weather was mixed; sometimes hot, sometimes cold, but always windy – up to Force 7 at times!
Most of the students were sailing novices but over the course of the week they learned all they needed to know about crewing a yacht. All sailing, navigation, cooking, coming alongside, anchoring etc was performed by the crew – with instruction from their watch leaders and watch officers.
At the end of the week each student took their ‘Competent Crew’ exam, which everyone passed! This is an official RYA qualification. All students also were awarded an Amory Award by the Rona Sailing Project. This is given to crew who have ‘given of their best’. In fact the Skipper said that they were the best crew he’d had in 27 years of sailing!
Well done to: Alice Pritchard, Jack Blewett, Darcy Blewett, Pema Bradley Peer, Harry Simmonds, Andrew Quaife, Imogen Gray Williams, Jodie Stephens (HDS), Olivia Egan and Olivia Hewett.
