On Monday a group of Yr 11 Public Service pupils went for a visit to Culdrose Naval Air Station. They visited the Navy’s fire training centre where they were all kitted out in fire fighting gear and put through the ‘rat run’ – a training tool where they were blindfolded and had to find their way in pairs through some narrow passages, over obstacles and through trap doors.
Next was the fire training building where they went into rooms which were set on fire! They were shown round the fire engines used to put out aircraft fires and were given the opportunity to practice putting out fires with water and CO2 extinguishers. In the afternoon they went to look round 771 Squadron and find out how the Search and Rescue helicopters operate.
