Kayak training expedition

On Friday 18th May the 8 members of the Kayak Expedition Club set off on their first training expedition.  They have been learning paddling skills all term but this was the first time they had been on an overnight expedition.  The weather was kind and we were able to paddle 8km from Falmouth up to Turnaware Bar – where the estuary narrows. We camped on National Trust ground that had been used as a launch site for the American troops for the D Day invasions. Boat packing and campcraft skills were practiced and even in the 2 days, new skills were learned and improved on. Another swift 8km back to Falmouth on Saturday and our progress back to Penzance was only hindered by the Olympic torch celebrations leaving us unable to leave Falmouth!

The 8 paddlers are looking forward to really testing their skills when they go on their Swedish sea kayaking expedition in July.
Many thanks to Falmouth Marine School for loaning us the kayaks and to Mr Strong for his help and support. (Sorry you can’t come to Sweden!)
