The Year 10 Geography group are just finishing a topic on extreme environments.
As part of the lesson, they participated in a debate on the future of Antarctica. The title was “Despite the growing demand fora fossil fuels and other precious minerals, Antarctica should be protected from exploitation at all costs.”
The debate become quite emotional at times and many members of the group had very strong opinions on the subject. Four students spoke, two in favour and two against. After each presentation, they then answered questions from the other class members. Some students came up with some very inventive ways about how Antarctica could be used in a more sustainable way and how it should be divided.
After much good hearted discussion, the overall outcome was 19 in favour, 2 against.
