While everyone was having fun and enjoying their half term break, James Midgley-Payne flew out to Athens, Greece, to compete in the 2016 Tang Soo Do European Championships. Part of an elite team of seven fighters, which also included SBN Robert James, the Master from ISK School of Martial Arts in Redruth, Cornwall, James and his sister Jennifer represented England for the second time this year. James had the huge honour of being chosen by the combined England Squad to carry the Union Jack flag and lead out the England Team in the opening parade. Met with rapturous applause, this was a very proud moment indeed.
Competing against teams from Germany, Greece, Belgium and the Netherlands to name but a few, James claimed victory and the under 14 category’s Championship title! He brings back both Gold and Silver for Sparring and Silver for Forms/Kata. His sister Jennifer, who hopes to join Mounts Bay next September, claimed the Under 12 Tang Soo Do European Champion 2016 Title after winning two Golds for Sparring including in a mixed category fighting both boys as well as girls, plus won Silver for Forms/Kata.
TWO European Champions in the same family is quite unprecedented and there’s no rest for James who is straight back to training focused on the next competition in November, the ‘Grand Open Karate Cup’. This will take place in Essex where he will compete using his Korean style of combat against various traditional Japanese Karate disciplines.
Having joined Mounts Bay Academy’s High Performance Programme recently, James is a shining example of how commitment, determination, discipline and a single minded pursuit of your goals can lead to remarkable results and a consistent success. He’s flying the flag for MBA and he’s flying the flag for Cornwall and he’s flying the flag for Great Britain. We’re immensely proud of him as he works towards competing in the World Championships in South Africa.
