An amazing set of results for our hard working Class of 2018

This year has seen the biggest change in the examination system in recent memory and as usual Mounts Bay students have smashed through the barriers facing them in embracing the challenges that the new end of course examinations and grading boundaries have presented.

This is a continuation of the changes that were started last year that have encompassed most of the examinations within the curriculum. Unlike many other schools we have continued to offer other Level 2 qualifications in areas like Music, the Arts, Food Technology and Media so that we can offer the broadest range of opportunities to students of all abilities.

It is important to remember that the GCSE’s were completely new examinations that tested their learning over a longer period of time Our students were not able to rely on coursework and did not have the ability to see past papers as a guideline for the type of answers they were expected to give.

We are confident that these results will be seen as some of our best ever and we are looking forward to seeing how they compare both regionally and nationally when the Progress 8 and Value Added results are published by the Department of Education.

As ever, every student will leave us with qualifications and we can celebrate almost 400 passes at the previous grade of A with an amazing 32 at the new grade 9 (the equivalent of an A**), with a further 36 at A* and an additional 18 AS level grades in Photography and Creative writing.

We have had some wonderful individual successes also. In light of the new GDPR regulations that came into force in May of this year we cannot name them fully, however Kim our top performing boy passed a total of 11 GCSE’s at a level of the previous Grade A or above with 6 at Grade 9, 2 at Grade 8 and 3 at Grade 7.

Our Top performing girl was Emma who achieved an amazing 12 GCSE’s at the previous Grade A or above with 7 at Grade 9, 3 at Grade 8 and 2 at Distinction Level.

They are surrounded by many other high achievers also included these outstanding performances:

Pasha  with 2 at Grade 9, 3 at Grade 8, 4 at Grade 7.
Harry  with 1 at Grade 9, 2 at Grade 8 and 3 at Grade 7.
Matthew  with 4 at Grade 8 and 4 at Grade 7.
Ellie  with 3 at Grade 9, 4 at Grade 8, 4 at Grade 7, 2 at A* and 2 at Distinction Level.
Alice  with 1 at Grade 9, 3 at Grade 8 and 2 at Grade 6.
Polly  with 3 at Grade 9, 2 and Grade 8 and 3 at Grade 7.

The Academy supports all our students by using High Performance Learning programmes that assume everyone is capable of learning to a high standard, it is just up to us to individualise the way we present in to them. This is not to be confused with learning for students at a higher level, which we cater for using our High Performance Institutes across many subject areas with expert staff. All of this must also be put into a context of broader educational and extra curricular opportunities and we are pleased that some of the wider highlights of our results show that everyone has benefited from their time with us.

For example over 50% of Triple Science students gained a qualification at the previous Grade A or Above and we have had some amazing achievements in Sport, Art, Music, Computing, English and Mathematics.

Students and parents can be reassured that the new grading system is fully understood by everyone here at the Academy and we are happy to discuss results with individuals over the coming weeks to ensure that everyone can gain a place on a course that meets their needs as they move in to the next stage of their lives.

The Governors and staff of Mounts Bay Academy would like to wish the 2018 cohort many congratulations for their hard work and dedication and wish them all the best as they move on to the next stage of their education or employment pathways.
