Regional Handball Action

On Wednesday 1st May the Mounts Bay U13 girls handball team travelled to the Regional Handball tournament at Paignton Sports Academy.

They had already won the county title and had progressed onto the  regional tournament including teams from Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Gloucester and Bristol.
They had a total of four games in the first round where they played Stroud High School, losing 5-4 in the first game but winning 5-4 in the second, and Holyrood School, winning 6-2 in the first game and 7-2 in the second.
The squad put on an excellent performance during the first round with key goals coming from Mari and Rosa. Izzy made some fantastic saves to hold Stroud High School off in the second round, meaning Mounts Bay took the victory, and progressed through to the final.
In the regional final the squad faced a tough Glenmoor Academy from Bournemouth. The final consisted to two 10 minute halves. The girls battled hard against a strong side, and the score was 5-6 at half time. The team went fighting into the second half. A top corner goal from Mari resulted in the teams level  at 6-6. Unfortunately, the power and speed of the Glenmoor side saw them put away another three goals that Mounts Bay could not come back from. The final score was 6-9.
The squad’s performance was outstanding  throughout the competition. They finished as South West runners up only narrowly missing out on progressing to nationals. This is a fantastic accolade the first time Mounts Bay have progressed to a Regional handball competition.

The Year 8 boys competed at the South West Regional Handball Championships last Wednesday after qualification from the county event. The standard was extremely high and the physical and tactical style of the opponents took some getting used to. However, MBA finished the day with a win and two losses to finish third in the Pool.
